The Gracious Tree

Standing tall and stately

Stretching to the sky

With blowing green locks

Whispering boughs

It’s bosoms cradled the nests

While the birds sang

In sheer happiness.

As I passed by the gracious tree

Which bowed in courtesy

Its boughs waved in reply

I rest in its shade

Absorbing its perpetual greenness.

Two decades have passed.

I passed by the gracious tree again

Now, I am saddened to see it

Old, large and bent

Without a cloak

Standing with its flaky trunk

Holding on to its majestic glory of yesteryear.

Having seen storms go by

It shrugged off  its foliage

And stood shy in its own nakedness

Scorned by birds unable to nest in its boughs.

Broken and brooding

The gracious tree stands

Without complaint or sigh

Ready to caress the earth.

  1. This is the trend of life. Givers once upon a time find them so useless. But we can’t deny the truth of life. Beautifully written ma’am.

  2. This is simply the story of time.
Once you understand quantum mechanics everything Wii be crystal clear and all the issues will be resolved.

    1. Same is d story of a human being! Very useful when young & useless & unwanted when too old!Sad truth of life, usually unidirectional!

  4. Its pure pleasure to go through your poems. Unusual subjects you pick, weave them beautifully with imagery so rare. Ma’am only you can handle such quaint topics with such elan. Bosom of the tree cradling nests, shy in its nakedness, scorned by birds. Still it is gracious, holds on to its glory of yesteryear, without complaint.
Beautiful analogy with women on the other side of 55, for we have cradled our babies, lost some of our sheen n youthfulness, with wrinkles n silver locks have become frail lost some of our Lustre. Often we become a butt of ridicule n are mocked n scorned for being slow on our responses, yet GRACIOUS enough to accept it ‘without complaint’ holding on to our glory of yesteryears. Proud n satisfied for having made a difference by presenting to the world our offspring to carry forward the legacy.
    Loved these musings IMMENSELY.

  8. Very well worded. The flow of thoughts cover an entire lifetime. You have sensitively portrayed the fact of life through an analogy with a tree. Each and every word conveys deep thoughts and makes us ponder over the transition from youth to old age.

  13. Throughout its existence the tree grows, blooms, reproduces, sheds, sometimes goes dormant and eventually dies just as all physical entities must….that to without any complaint.

We humans also have seasons in life, and while we do not shed leaves we do have friends and family that perish (parts of our family tree)…..

    Awesome musing ma’am..
U everyone take us to a different world of imagination…👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

  19. There is a deep melancholy at the heart of the thought you have expressed so beautifully, dear Heemal. and yet there is satisfaction too, and grace, and acceptance. I read it to my daughter and she said, “I am beguiled”. I can only say, I too am enchanted.

  25. Ma’am, this is a fabulous expression to bring our attention towards the old, feeble and faded creations of God who have lost their lustre with the time. But once they were the important parts of our lives, serviced us selflessly……either parents or trees.

  29. So touching and insightful poem Ma’am…We all need to be like this tree- graceful and giver, even in trying circumstances…Feeling nostalgic after reading you…
